Falling Into Mental Health: How to Stay Sane this Season

Ah, October—the season of pumpkin spice, cozy sweaters, and a sneaky sense of panic as the holidays lurk just around the corner. As the weather cools (well, in some places—not so much for us in Miami), it’s easy to get swept up in the fall frenzy. But before you start decking the halls or carving one too many pumpkins, let’s talk about something just as important: your mental health. Yes, as much as we love the fall vibes, this time of year can also bring on stress, especially with the whirlwind of the holiday season approaching.

So, how can we keep our cool as we sip our hot apple cider? Here are a few seasonal steps to take care of yourself as we dive into fall and prep for the holidays:

  1. Leaf Your Stress Behind (See what I did there?)
Just like the trees are shedding their leaves, this is the perfect time to let go of some of your own burdens. Whether it’s a to-do list that never seems to end or holiday expectations that stress you out, now’s the time to set boundaries. Don’t be afraid to say “no” to that extra Halloween party or “yes” to a quiet night at home watching spooky movies.
  2. Find Your Pumpkin Patch of Peace
The fall season is all about finding comfort in the little things—think warm blankets, candles that smell like cinnamon, and quiet moments with a good book. Create a space where you can recharge, even if it’s just 15 minutes a day. Call it your “pumpkin patch of peace”—because you deserve to harvest a little calm in the chaos.
  3. Carve Out Time for Self-Care
Yes, we’re all busy, but just like carving a pumpkin, we’ve got to carve out time for ourselves. Whether it’s going for a walk to enjoy the crisp air (again, Miami—maybe just slightly less humid air?), journaling, or picking up a hobby like baking seasonal treats, make sure you’re giving yourself moments to unwind. And if you’re feeling fancy, throw on a face mask while sipping some spiced tea—it’s the ultimate fall vibe.
  4. Don’t Fall Into the Comparison Trap
As the holidays approach, it’s easy to get caught up in the social media highlight reel of perfectly decorated homes and Pinterest-worthy parties. Remember, nobody’s life is as perfect as it looks through an Instagram filter. Focus on your own happiness, not the pressure to keep up with everyone else.
  5. Treat Yo’ Self—But Don’t Trick Your Mind
Halloween is all about treats, but let’s keep it balanced. While it’s totally okay to indulge in candy corn and pumpkin-flavored everything, don’t forget that your mental health thrives on physical well-being too. Make sure you’re fueling your body with good food, getting enough sleep, and moving around a little (you can even count dancing to spooky playlists as exercise!).

As we get deeper into the fall season and closer to the holidays, remember to take a breath and focus on the things that bring you joy. Whether it’s the changing leaves (or imagining them if you’re in a place where seasons don’t change), pumpkin spice, or simply taking a break from the hustle, let this be the season where you put your mental health first. After all, just like a well-cared-for pumpkin, you’ll shine brightest when you take the time to nurture yourself.

Happy Fall Friends and Be Well, y’all!
